  • 3D Printing Before Vacuum Casting

    Before vacuum casting, we need to make a few prototypes in advance by CNC machining or 3D printing. It is the basis of vacuum casting.

  • Vacuum Casting Stage2

    We pour the liquid silicone into the casting box until it fully covers the prototypes. After curing and solidifying for a specific period, the silicone mold will be cut and the prototypes will be taken out.

  • Vacuum Casting Parts

    When the mold is finished, we will put it into the vacuum casting machine, which will automatically cast the liquid plastic into the mold. The lifespan of a silicone mold can be reused 20 times.

What Is the Material Range for Vacuum Casting?

What Is Vacuum Casting?

Vacuum casting is a technique that applies silicone molds to create low-volume copies of the prototype. Vacuum casting is an affordable manufacturing method for verifying and testing the design. It has a wide application in the industries of automotive, medical, and aerospace. 

Automotive Vacuum Casting

The details of the vacuum casting process can be roughly divided into 5 steps:

Step1: Creating the plastic prototypes

Prototype is the foundation of vacuum casting. We are capable of creating the plastic prototypes by 3D printing and CNC machining. Two of them are popular manufacturing methods for prototyping.

Step2: Producing silicone molds

The skilled workers will mix up the silicone rubber and degas them. After that, we can pour the material into the frame, where the material pieces are placed in advance. And then place it into the heating machine to form a silicone mold.

Step3: Cooling and cutting the silicone mold

After cooling, this silicone mold is cut and we can take out the prototype parts from it.

Step4: Casting the material

In the pouring chamber, the machine automatically pours the material and mixes the pigment into the silicone mold under a vacuum. 

Step5: Taking the finished parts 

After casting, we will place the mold in a heating chamber again to accelerate curing. Then, we can take the formed plastic parts out of the mold. 

Step6: Finishing

At this stage, there are still gates and risers left on the vacuum casting parts. We will cut these off and do any additional finishing.

Is Vacuum Casting As Accurate As Injection Molding?

No, the tolerance of plastic vacuum casting components is not as as accurate as injection molding. The injection molding requires tooling, which can be applied to create plastic parts with higher tolerance within ±0.1mm. At the same time, the vacuum casting parts are produced according to the prototypes.

Can You Reuse the Silicone Mold for Multiple Times?
