What Is Overmolding?
The Basics of Overmolding?

Overmolding is a two-step process that uses two or more plastics on top of each other to form an overmolded part.

The two steps of overmolding involve the fabrication of two parts: the substrate and the second layer. In the first step, we make that substrate first. After it is cured, we make the second layer directly on top of the substrate to form a single part. The common application of overmolded parts consists of cell cases, silicone handles, and toothbrushes. The common plastics are ABS, HDPE, PEEK, Nylon, PC, PE, TPU, PMMA, POM, etc.

 

What Is the Difference between Insert Molding and Overmolding?

Both overmolding and insert molding are variants of injection molding. The difference between them is that the substrate is different. The overmolding applies plastics as the substrate while insert molding uses metals.
